The Wilderness is patterned after the Gila Wilderness in nearby New Mexico...so a brushier, scrappier, wilder look.

You see the Old Miner's Shack and a replica of an old mine. This is where we share a little of our local history reminding folks that originally in 1913, UTEP was "The College of Mines" with a curriculum in Mining Engineering which included geology, mining and extractive metallurgy. You begin to find animal prints along the rustic trail as you move along.

The wilderness closes in and opens up...

...to a Giant Tarantula! In fact you have to walk through the Giant Tarantula legs to get to all the fun on the other side...

...a natural free-play Wilderness Playground with special consideration for all-abilities friends!

Next you find the Giant Bird's Nest and take your picture in the Giant Eggshell!

Then you explore a little bird education! How big am I? And a little info to get familiar with birds in our region.

You can stop and play in one of the seasonal plant tipis scattered throughout.

Or join in one of the regularly scheduled activities in the Fruits of the Forest Mud Kitchen!

Be careful to watch out for the ant bed where you will see two 6' long Giant Red Ant Sculptures by local sculptor Julio Sanchez de Alba.

These are the rentable dwellings in the Wilderness. Rent one or all! They are great for family occasions, date night, anniversaries or proposals! Select one of our packages ahead of time for the look you want.

That was fun! What's next? The Three Sisters edible garden!
