CONSERVATION & SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability and conservation actually go hand in hand. A sustainable landscape can clean the air and water, restore habitats, and counter environmental damage. At El Paso Children's Garden sustainability will be woven into everything we do across the management of the garden from integrated pest management to what tools we use, what fuel we use and what materials we build with.

PLANT CONSERVATION

Plants support life. They are the source of oxygen we breathe, the food we eat and provide the raw materials for shelter, medicine, clothing, fuel and a myriad of other products that we depend on. It couldn't be more important that we protect the diversity of plants in our region, and support local pollination. We will be working with regional organizations and agencies to support recovery planning for rare or threatened species through representation in the living plant collections.

SOIL CONSERVATION

Soil conservation includes a number of practices that treat soil as a living ecosystem, protect it from degradation, erosion or depletion, and preserve fertility by returning organic matter for a full cycle. Soil health is closely tied to water conservation ensuring that water used is held in the soil where it is needed.

WATER CONSERVATION

Water conservation includes collection and filtering of water through passive water harvesting for reuse in irrigation, and implementation of innovative technology using an Onsite Water Treatment System that reclaims graywater & blackwater for irrigation of everything but edible plants.
